With 6 arches the bridge is a Grade 2 listed structure.  Originally a link between Carlisle and Hawick it formed a part of the Border Union Railway which came to be known as the ‘Waverley Route’. The bridge has the British Railways Board reference   BRB etc 265. Upriver of the viaduct is the Willowholme Industrial Estate, the West Coast Main Line and the back of Carlisle Castle.

I have found the Waverley Viaduct over the River Eden in Carlisle on your site. Could you tell me how and when it came to be listed, what that means in terms of protection and obligation on the owner to maintain it please?
