It is named after the thick oak woodlands that surrounded the main house.<\/p>\n<p>The manor was sold by the Crown to the Dalston family in 1544. \u00a0<a title=\"The history and antiquities of the counties of Westmorland\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=zeEuAAAAMAAJ&amp;pg=PA383&amp;lpg=PA383&amp;dq=acorn+bank+temple+sowerby&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=J3CYokub9Y&amp;sig=aKA_BG_2Fd57N5nLMfw8Xm5sXqM&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=316_SpOQGaOZjAfJ4tA4&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=68#v=onepage&amp;q=acorn%20bank%20temple%20sowerby&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Sir Christopher Dalston<\/a> was knighted by King James in 1615. He married Anne, the daughter of Sir William Hutton of Penrith.<\/p>\n<p>The Estate changed it&#8217;s name in the early 1930&#8217;s and became Temple Sowerby Manor when it was occupied by poet and writer Dorothy Clough and her second husband Capt. Noel McGrigor Phillips.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy wrote and was more widely known under the name\u00a0<a title=\"Dorothy Una Ratcliffe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artisan-harmony.com\/durplusbutton.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Dorothy Una Ratcliffe<\/a>,\u00a0 also know to her friends as DUR. \u00a0She was the niece in Law of\u00a0<a title=\"Brotherton Collection - University of Leeds.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.leeds.ac.uk\/library\/spcoll\/brocoll.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Lord Brotherton<\/a> and inherited part of his Estate upon his death.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_933\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-933\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-933\" title=\"acorn_bank_sept09_pic3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic3-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"Acorn Bank, Temple Sowerby\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic3-203x152.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic3.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-933\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Acorn Bank, Temple Sowerby<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Restoration of both the house and gardens was to become a key part of life for the couple.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the internal woodwork repairs and commissions were undertaken by &#8216;The Mouseman of Kilburn,&#8217; <a title=\"Robert Thompson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.robertthompsons.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Thompson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Following the sudden death of Capt. Phillips, Dorothy handed the property to the National Trust in around 1950. It then reverted back to it&#8217;s original title of Acorn Bank<\/p>\n<p>DUR spent many hours in the gardens and planted many shrubs, trees, bulbs and re-arranging the planting in general to create a changing garden throughout the seasons.<\/p>\n<p>In early spring the woodlands and main drive come alive with bright yellow daffodils some of which are now classed as heritage varieties.<\/p>\n<p>Apple blossom and riots of colour transform the Estate during the summer sunshine which gives way to a rich bounty of fruit at the start of winter.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy died in Scotland 20 November 1967.\u00a0\u00a0She is buried nearby in Temple Sowerby Church.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After purchasing your entrance tickets you emerge into one of the two apple orchards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_943\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-943\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/perry_pear_acorn_bank.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-943\" title=\"perry_pear_acorn_bank\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/perry_pear_acorn_bank-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"Perry Pear\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perry Pear<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Acorn Bank features around 20 varieties of apple including many <a title=\"Old Varieties\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oldvarieties.com\">heritage varieties<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During October apples are the centre of attraction when Acorn Bank hosts an<a title=\"Cumbria's Apple Day events\" href=\"http:\/\/oldvarieties.com\/contents1a\/2009\/09\/apple-day-in-cumbria-2009\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Apple Day.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trees are distributed in the main walled garden and in a more open area beyond.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"All about Mistletoe\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mistletoe.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mistletoe<\/a> can be seen growing on some of the apple trees.<\/p>\n<p>Apple trees are complemented by a magnificent Blakeney Red Perry Pear and Medlars in the main walled garden.<\/p>\n<p>This variety of pear originates from the 17th Century and is still a popular pear for Perry making, a form of cider made from pears,\u00a0 the skins were used after stewing\u00a0to dye soldiers&#8217; khaki uniforms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medicinal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Acorn Bank has become noted for the herb and medicinal plant garden which you can find to your right as you enter the gardens from the ticket office.<\/p>\n<p>Reportedly holding the largest collection of medicinal and culinary in England, over 250 plant types, it also features a few Damson trees and a fine Portuguese quince.<\/p>\n<p>Herbs have also been named after Acorn Bank. \u00a0These possibly include the Acorn Bank\u00a0<a title=\"Oregano  - Acorn Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ehow.com\/how_4549060_identify-care-acorn-bank-oregano.html\" target=\"_blank\">Oregano<\/a> \/ Marjoram<\/p>\n<p>The herb garden was <a title=\"Herb garden replanted\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/rhsgardenfinder\/GardenFinder3.asp?ID=717\" target=\"_blank\">replanted<\/a> in 2002 &#8211; 3<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water Mill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A circular woodland walk runs along Crowdundle Beck to the partially restored Acorn Bank watermill, which is open to visitors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_937\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-937\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-937\" title=\"acorn_bank_sept09_pic7\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic7-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"Acorn Bank, Temple Sowerby\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic7-203x152.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic7-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic7.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-937\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Acorn Bank Mill, Temple Sowerby<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Three 12ft waterwheels ensured that as much energy as possible could be harnesses from the beck that runs alongside the 19th Century Mill.<\/p>\n<p>The top and middle wheels drove the corn milling equipment whilst the bottom one drove a saw bench.<\/p>\n<p>At some point the middle wheel was adapted to provide power to a nearby gypsum mine.<\/p>\n<p>Wooden cogs transferred the vertical rotation of the waterwheels outside to the horizontal rotation of up to four pairs of millstones inside the mill.<\/p>\n<p>Only one wooden waterwheel has been restored and is used to power some demonstration milling equipment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-935\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-935\" title=\"acorn_bank_sept09_pic5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic5-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"Acorn Bank, Temple Sowerby\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic5-203x152.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic5-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/acorn_bank_sept09_pic5.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Acorn Bank, Temple Sowerby<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The middle part of the building, currently in need of renovation, was once a kiln. \u00a0Here oats were dried on a floor above a diffused fire pit before being milled.<\/p>\n<p>Once the watermill has been visited a walk following the mill race is well worth the trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Caution should be noted, that in the wet this path may be slippy.\u00a0 It also has a steep zig zag path at the end so will not be suitable for wheelchairs.
