{"id":6450,"date":"2012-06-02T19:30:08","date_gmt":"2012-06-02T18:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/?p=6450"},"modified":"2012-06-02T19:31:48","modified_gmt":"2012-06-02T18:31:48","slug":"st-thomas-a-becket-church-in-farlam-cumbria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/2012\/06\/st-thomas-a-becket-church-in-farlam-cumbria\/","title":{"rendered":"St Thomas a Becket Church in Farlam, Cumbria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Farlam church, dedicated to St. Thomas \u00e0 Becket, is a plain stone building, in the Early English style, near the hamlet of Kirkhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Erected near the site of the former medieval church in 1860, by Salvin at a\u00a0 cost of about \u00a32,000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6454\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6454\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_1967.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6454\" title=\"St. Thomas a Becket church Farlam\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_1967-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"St. Thomas a Becket church Farlam\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Thomas a Becket church Farlam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The grade II listed building is constructed from dressed calciferous sandstone on a chamfered plinth with ashlar quoins and a graduated green slate roof with coped gables.<\/p>\n<p>It consists of 4 bay nave which has north and south gabled porches with pointed arches and 2 light lancet windows, the 2 bay chancel has a tripartite east window and pointed lancets.<\/p>\n<p>The shouldering lintel to the vestry dates to 1860, a north 4 bay isle has round columns and pouted arches. There is also an aisle, south vestry and west double bellcote.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the roof is open timbered.\u00a0 Furnishings and stained glass are mid 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>A church is recorded in Farlam as early as the year 1169, when it was included in the munificent grant of Robert de Vallibus to the Prior of Lanercost.<\/p>\n<p>At the dissolution this church, along with the other possessions of the priory, was granted to Sir Thomas Dacre, and is now in the patronage and impropriation of the Earl of Carlisle.<\/p>\n<p>The Hon. Charles Howard, of Naworth Castle. presented the ground for the site, and also contributed \u00a3500 towards the construction.<\/p>\n<p>A gift of \u00a3200 was given by Mrs. Maria Thompson for a new organ, the pictorial east window as a memorial of her late husband, James Thompson, Esq.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Farlam church bells<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Records from &#8220;Church bells in Brampton Deanery&#8221; indicate that Farlam church had two bells in 1552 but only 1 was recorded in 1749.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6455\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_1976.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6455\" title=\"Bellcote at St. Thomas a Becket church, Farlam\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_1976-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Bellcote at St. Thomas a Becket church, Farlam\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bellcote at St. Thomas a Becket church, Farlam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two bells now hand in the bellcote;\u00a0 One of them 19 inches in diameter and weighing I cwt. 3qrs., in the note B.
