He even invented a rain gauge.<\/p>\n<p>He is seen by many to be the father of English geology.<\/p>\n<p>The carved slate plaque positioned high on a wall near to his former residence reads :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Here lived<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Jonathan Otley,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 1766 &#8211; 1856.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Geologist and clockmaker.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A humble student of nature and science, who laboured for his fellows.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Nearby a flight of steps lead to a sealed door which once was the entrance to his accommodation and workshop. He lived and worked here between 1797 and 1853.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3008\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3008\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/otley_keswick_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3008\" title=\"Jonathan Otley - His Keswick connections\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/otley_keswick_1-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan Otley - His Keswick connections\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The steps have recently been restored leading to his former residence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The steps in King&#8217;s Head Court, became damaged over the years and in early 2011 the Keswick Civic Society had them repaired<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Although he is known as a clockmaker little seems to exist of his work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Several <a title=\"http:\/\/www.geog.port.ac.uk\" href=\"http:\/\/www.geog.port.ac.uk\/webmap\/thelakes\/html\/otley\/otleyj.htm\" target=\"_blank\">biographical articles<\/a> have been written about this important local character, who was dubbed the Father of Lakeland Geology by J E Marr in 1916.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Towards the end of his life he sold off many of his belongings in an auction. \u00a0Some however still survive and can be seen in Keswick Museum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jonathan died in Keswick in 1856 and is buried in Crosthwaite Churchyard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"A Concise Description of the English Lakes, and Adjacent Mountains: with General Directions to Tourists\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/1110125100\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=berkeleygrang-21&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738&amp;creativeASIN=1110125100\" target=\"_blank\">A Concise Description of the English Lakes, and Adjacent Mountains: with General Directions to Tourists<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jonathan Otley recalled\" href=\"http:\/\/otley.host22.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Otley recalled<\/a> while visiting England &#8211;
