Attached to the side of the former\u00a0Carlisle City Church\u00a0in Lowther Street, Carlisle is this tablet to commemorate the visit of a President to the City.<\/p>\n

As part of his ‘Pilgrimage of the Heart’ in 1918, President Woodrow Wilson visited the area where his mother,\u00a0Janet (Jessie or\u00a0Jeanie) Woodrow Wilson, was born.<\/p>\n

President Woodrow Wilson<\/a>, was the\u00a028th President of the USA.<\/p>\n

Upon arriving in Carlisle, by train, \u00a0the President made his way to \u00a0The Crown and Mitre Hotel<\/a> where he signed the freemen’s roll. \u00a0This roll is collected in what is known as the Dormont Book<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The party then visited Annetwell Street where he saw the site of his late grandfathers chapel.<\/p>\n

Later in the day The President was asked to address those gathered at the Lowther Street Congretational Church by the Pastor Rev. Edward Booth.<\/p>\n

This was the second visit to the city. \u00a0His first was as an unknown tourist<\/a> in the 1890’s.<\/p>\n

Janet Woodrow,(his mother) was\u00a0the daughter of the Rev. Thomas Woodrow and his first wife, Marion Williamson.<\/p>\n

The Reverend Thomas Woodrow<\/a> M.A., was\u00a0a Scottish Presbyterian minister. \u00a0It is said he was the first of his family to leave Scotland in over 500 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He preached at a church in \u00a0Annetwell Street, Carlisle, between February 1820 and June 1835.<\/p>\n

In 1836 the family\u00a0emigrated\u00a0to New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to the US State Department of State<\/a> President Woodrow Wilson also met with\u00a0Met with Prime Minister Lloyd George<\/a> and King George V<\/a> during his visit to the UK between\u00a0December 26-31, 1918.<\/p>\n
