Between the A9 and the Cromarty Firth in the far north of Scotland is the\u00a0Rosskeen burial ground <\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although the church has been disused for many years the cemetery is still in use.<\/p>\n

The church was built in 1830-32 by James Smith on the site of an earlier chapel.<\/p>\n

The church was repaired and altered by Andrew Maitland in 1853.<\/p>\n

In the extensive grounds of the church is a small, quite insignificant building, which is the last resting place for the Munro’s of Newmore and Culrain.<\/p>\n

Said to have been erected in 1664 and restored in 1908 this building is the Munro Mausoleum or\u00a0chapel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The triple lancet windows of this building suggest that it might date from the 13th or 14th centuries.<\/p>\n

The clan Munro<\/a> are said to have come to Scotland from Ireland in the 11th Century and indeed records date back to a Donald Munro of Foulis who died in 1039.<\/p>\n

This particular Munro memorial was restored by Sir. hector Munro of Foulis, the 11th Baronet of Foulis and Chief of the Clan Munro.<\/p>\n

Newspaper articles<\/a> published in early 2010 indicate that Highland Council wish to sell off the church despite local opposition.<\/p>\n

Outside the church gates is a set of stone steps leading to a flat top around 1.5m square. \u00a0This possibly was to allow people in and out of \u00a0horse drawn carriages.<\/p>\n
