Constant waring between the Scots and English along with regular skirmishes from the <a title=\"Find out more about the Border Reiving clans of England and Scotland\" href=\"http:\/\/www.borderreivers.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Border Reivers,<\/a> left the building battle scarred and ruined. Robert Bruce, himself once laid seige to Lanercost Priory.<\/p>\n<p>The dying <a title=\"Death of a King podcast\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/2009\/04\/death-of-a-king-burgh-by-sands\/\" target=\"_blank\">King Edward I<\/a> rested at the priory for five months in 1306 to 1307, shortly before his death on his final campaign.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"about Henry VIII\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britroyals.com\/kings.asp?id=henry8\" target=\"_blank\">Henry VIII&#8217;s<\/a> dissolution of the monasteries, saw the fine building finally stripped of its goods with even the masonry and roof tiles being used to furnish other buildings of the Tudor period.<\/p>\n<p>The building passed into the hands of\u00a0 Thomas Dacre of nearby <a title=\"Naworth Castle website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naworth.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Naworth Castle.<\/a> Some of the buildings were converted into a private residence, now known as Dacre Hall but the rest fell into ruin.<\/p>\n<p>The nave of the Priory was restored in 1740 for use as a Parish Church, under the supervision of Anthony Salvin, who had previously carried out restoration works at Naworth Castle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1314\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1314\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/IMG_1725.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1314\" title=\"One of the best preserved monasteries in Cumbria\" src=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/IMG_1725-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"One of the best preserved monasteries in Cumbria\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/IMG_1725-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/IMG_1725-203x152.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/IMG_1725.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the best preserved monasteries in Cumbria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Parish church dedicated to <a title=\"Lanercost Priory parish website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lanercostpriory.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">St. Mary Magdalene<\/a> now hosts regular Anglican services, as it has done for 850 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>English Heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lanercost Priory is considered to be the best preserved monastery in Cumbria, with the east end of the noble 13th century church surviving to its full height.
