Approaching the town you pass Sanquhar Castle. It was the home of the Edgars, Roses and in the 13th century the Crichtons of Sanquhar. It was the scene of many battles in the Wars of Independance and has been visited by Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots. It is currently owned by Lord Sanquhar.
